Helping the world’s poorest with health care technology
Many of the world’s peoples live in communities that are poor, sometimes desperately poor. The health consequences can be dreadful, especially for mothers and their newborns, as health care providers struggle with inadequate resources. In these places, water and power supplies may unreliable, equipment may not function and life-saving surgical procedures may be prevented for want of a simple fuse. Hospitals, their budgets already insufficient to support basic care, often cannot afford the technical staff needed to keep equipment working.
Engineering World Health was founded to answer some of the needs of these vulnerable communities. We work with university-based biomedical engineers, industry professionals, charities that manage donated medical equipment, the international health community and developing countries. Using the knowledge and resources made possible by these partnerships, EWH combines innovation in appropriate technology with direct support to medical technology management, maintenance and repair to achieve lasting impact in developing countries.
We welcome the support and involvement in our work of engineers, scientists and health providers, students and experienced professionals, in fact anyone who wants to improve the health of disadvantaged people and help lift their communities out of poverty.
